Willowlea is an historic farm located in upstate New York in the town of Argyle. It was built in 1808 during the period of settlement which followed the Revolutionary War.
The original kitchen was constructed in the cellar and still boasts a rare bee hive brick oven, complete with a scalding kettle and ovens on either side of the fireplace. While not in use today, the fireplace has propane logs that create a cozy effect on chilly days. The Federal-style farmhouse has been lovingly restored with many original features remaining such as plaster walls, woodwork and windowpanes dating from the mid-1800s. Electricity and plumbing weren’t installed until the late 1950s although today there are two full bathrooms, one that boasts a water closet. Much of the artwork is original by local artists and there are several historic paintings of the owner’s ancestors that dominate the dining room. The porch which looks out onto a beautiful perennial garden is another feature where it’s possible to spend an afternoon basking in the beautiful countryside that surrounds the house. A farm pond lies adjacent to the farmhouse, complete with Adirondack chairs and seating areas for outside pleasure. There are many fine Willow trees that surround the pond, and, in the spring, it is possible to listen to the peepers in the evening. Willowlea’s farmhouse is surrounded by 100 acres of meadows and forests that boast hiking trails suitable for everyone to enjoy. It is also possible to experience foraging workshops where participants learn to recognize edibles: mushrooms, plants and herbs. Whether you are looking for an enchanted get-a-way, celebrating an occasion, hosting a party or wedding reception Willowlea is an ideal location far off the main highways and yet an easy drive from Saratoga Springs, Glens Falls, Lake George, New York or Vermont.
